If you’ve been in York in the last couple of weeks you’ll have no doubt come across the Food & Drink Festival. Now we’ve had nothing to do with that…. well okay, we have in so much as going round it & buying and tasting lots….! Fashion City York’s StyleFocus set up in the Fountain Cafe Bar which belongs to the Food & Drink Festival on the 17th. We were involved with the opening show which was put together by ‘Nude Directions’ – four amazing girls that can certainly dance!!! T shirt and training pants on it was time to hit not the gym but the pole studio for a taster! So many of us will join gyms with the best intentions this month, and so many will stop going because they hate it, find it boring or just don’t have the time for it. Why not think about something different that you’ll enjoy and make time for? Certainly worth a taster lesson – you may just discover a new love! (Taster sessions are avaliable on mentioning this blog for £5, normally £7.50). A little bit apprehensive & not sure what to expect I made my way to the Eco Centre on Clifton Moor to Pole Position Fitness for a first ever lesson! I was really excited to go and try something a few of my friends do, but also really scared – what if I couldn’t do it!!! Having never set foot near a pole I didn’t know what to expect, maybe this is what made me worried about it. Fortunatley Nannette knows that we may feel a bit awkward and runs classes to suit you – for eample Febuary can look forward to a new yummy mummy class! Welcomed into what can only be described as a pink girly palace, Nannette went through some health & safety questions with us & we put our shoes into the ‘pink bucket’. After explaining about the pole we started with some warm-up aerobic exercise and stretches. Each session lasts an hour, all starting with a warm up and ending with a cool down. You can either have a one to one, or a small group lesson (I took a friend!) or go for a class lesson which is great as you have more people to copy and chat to about any worries or difficulties you’re having. Shoes off, warmed up and ready to swing round that pole! This is the bit I was most nervous about – but I really didn’t need to be! To the pole – Mostly you learn through watching. Nannette walked us through each move & spin, so you can start by walking slowly and going through each move step by step, building up to doing the moves in a normal speed. The first thing we learnt was a fireman cross leg, then a backwards spin (which took me a while to master!) called the back hook spin. There are also various floor moves which use the pole rather than relying on spinning on it – sliding crab and a B hook pose to mention a couple! We ended with a cheeky little routine to Santa Baby and some stretches to cool off and wind down. It was an awesome experience, I cannot recommend it enough! Get over any fears and book it – it is a great way of getting toned, my thighs, stomach muscles and arms were sore for the next few days. Perfect for getting the girls together in the new year and working some festive tummy off! All the girls at Pole Position are lovely – the atmosphere is fab and remember taster sessions are avaliable on mentioning this blog for £5, normally £7.50). So many people I have talked to say they would love to have a go at pole fitness but the excuses roll out – Im too old, too fat, too weak…. All rubbish ladies! The instructor started pole lessons when she was 35 and 4 years later opened up the studio just outside of York. After your first taster you’re sure to love it and think ‘actually I can do it’ and look forward to the next lesson! Some ladies can be pretty offended by the wrong kind of pants (yes Im afraid this is yet another pothole you could find yourself crashing into.... Ladies dont make it easy do they, then I guess it would be no fun if it was easy right?)   Thongs, knickers, french-knickers, proper French knickers, briefs, boy shorts tap pants.......   Okay theres a few there that you may be thinking - ‘what the.....’   Remember the main choice on lingerie sets is thong or pant - What you need to do is take note of the underwear thats on the dryer, do the washing so you can have a look (and gain some brownie points) or just have a route through the drawer! Go for what she has most of (most ladies will have a basic array of knickers & thongs to cover various dress solutions), so look at what pants she has in her matching sets or what she wears everyday << simple! Because the last few weeks has seen an increase of the male customer buying for lucky ladies we decided it would be a good idea to post up our buying guide which will not only help guy’s who are looking to purchase but also if girls are looking to buy something for a friend or their mummies! We could go really, madly in depth but this is an easy reading, useful write up which won’t bog you down with too much info! Lingerie is such a popular gift, yet it is an equally daunting one; With this in mind we wanted to help with some advice if you’re a guy wanting to buy someone special lingerie, nightwear or just something underwear inspired. You dont have to buy for your girlfriend or wife, sisters, mums, grans & aunts all love frilly knickers! – Why? Because we’re women & we like nice things Nice underwear makes us feel valued, special; it gives us visual delight & a bounce in our step. It shows thought and sensitivity when someone buys you underwear. Its never a bad idea to make a woman happy, so make Christmas 2010 lingerie time! You will of course need to do some undercover investigation…. Just be careful she doesn’t think you’ve gained a liking to wearing her undergarments! Here’s a run down of the things to look for: 1 – Size! What’s she wearing at the moment that fits? You can go for the direct approach, or a little more subtle, sneak a peek in the knicker drawer. You could enlist the help of a female friend on this case – just make sure she can keep a secret! Make sure you write it down – you will forget otherwise! If its your mum or gran we do suggest getting someone else to do the hard work! Or go for something dress sized as this is often much easier! 2 – Remember to get the matching pants! It doesn’t have to be a complete lingerie set if you’re not comfortable with this, silk knickers and an eye mask are a sensual and luxurious gift. If you’re completely stuck go for a voucher and she can treat herself – just make sure you take note of size and what she likes so you can surprise her in the future! So, after almost three months of leaving our shop front on the Shambles whats new? We’re right in the process of having our new website developed. We had hoped for the launch of this to be a lot earlier but due to circumstance and wanting to get everything right we’ve held back. The company we have working on it are fantastic & the visuals are beautiful! We’re looking forward to having a gorgeous new site in 2011, easy to navigate and a pleasure to view. Lots of people have asked why we are changing whats already rather a pretty website. We want to improve our userbility, the new website will allow for searches to narrow our stock by brand or size. on 21 November 2008 we opened our doors on the Shambles! Having launched over the weekend of the famous St Nic's Fair in York we thought that there was no better way to celebrate other than have a repeate performance! This time we had our lingerie models into store over two days, cupcakes (very kindly donated by Feast Yorkshire) over three days and the launch of a new lingerie line by local designer Claire Mckay based in Manchester. We've totted up all the donations and can announce we've raised £202.55 during Breast Cancer Awareness month! Our pink evening was held 29th October to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness month - along with our raffle & pink bra competition! We had a great time, pink cupcakes provided by Love to Eat (lovetoeat.co.uk) & bubbly flavored pink with berries from Xing smoothies in the Shambles. Lots of ladies came along to be fitted & treat themselves to new lingerie and hosiery, 10% of the profits were donated to Breast Cancer Campagin building on our total raised from the raffle and the just giving page set up by the shop. Thank you to everyone who came - we raised lots of money for a great charity that touches everyone.

October is Breast Cancer Aware month! York is going pink - there are lots of events going on - all aiming to raise lots of funds for breast cancer research. It is a cause close to our heart, Sarah (the founder of Elizabeth Wells) lost her close Aunt to breast cancer two years ago. The upsetting thing is that two years prior to going to the doctors and being diagnosed, her Aunt did notice some changes in her breasts but did not speak up; perhaps if she was more breast cancer aware she may still be here today and would have lived to see Sarah open her first lingerie boutique in York. There are several things that we are doing at Elizabeth Wells in order to raise as much as we can for Breast Cancer Aware: PINK RAFFLE - We have some amazing prizes from lingerie, photo shoots to a health and spa package from Bannatynes (see below for a full list) . All profits from the raffle will be donated to the charity. The tickets cost £5 for a book, £1 each.
